The House

The house was sitting
By the river’s side
With the little old man
And his aging bride

They had moved there
So many years ago
He built it himself
Every nail he could show

They filled up their home
With children and life
Filled up with love
And sometimes with strife

With love and tenderness
They had all been grown
And now they all
Have families of their own

And then he’d sit
By the river and fish
She’d tend to the garden
And cook the dish

And once a year
At Christmas time
They’d gather together
A day so sublime

And they’d tell old time stories
And eat lots of food
And they’d unwrap their presents
Then the night would conclude

And each would go home
With a hug and a kiss
Then the old man and woman
Would sit and reminisce

But long ago
Was even this
And the old house sits
And begins to miss

The man and his wife
Who live there so long
Now the house is empty
And they are gone

No children come
To play anymore
No wife there waiting
At the door

Empty and old
It comes undone
Under the fading the rays
Of the setting sun
