Life's Grand Drama

It seems to me that many people are stick in the roles they play through life, merely acting out their parts in the grand drama that unfolds before them. It takes a supreme act of faith and will for most to actively seek to change their parts in life's show, and act that not many make due to a lack of will or a simple desire for the comforts of the known.

When change does occur it is generally not because of a proactive search for personal or professional growth, but generally comes unbidden, caused by external forces placed upon them, who must change in order to survive. Even then a person’s role may not change, but merely the set on which that person is playing. Many people will stay at a job they hate, or live in a relationship they don’t like merely because it is convenient. For them change is the thing they long for, but they can’t bring themselves to do it for a variety of reasons. Change for them only occurs when they get laid off or their partner finds someone else or things get just too bad for them to handle anymore.

For some people, change is so constant or consistent that change itself becomes that person’s script. I have known several people in life who stay at their jobs for two years and then move on in order to get ahead in life. For them their script is to succeed at all costs, including the cost of creating or growing roots. Others I have known are even more erratic than that. They move from job to job like the wind blowing leaves across a field, never staying long enough to find a home. Change too, if consistent, is also a role that can be played.

While changing one’s role can be a good thing, it can also be bad as well. When ever we are thinking about a change in our lives we should research it and plan accordingly. Change for the sake of change can be as bad, if not worse, than no change at all.
